Capes Over Vapes - Movies in the Park BACKGROUNDPowhatan Parks and Recreation is seeking teens (grades 8-12) to serve on the Capes Over Vapes! event planning committee. Capes Over Vapes is a grant-funded program creatively developed by County staff to address the concern of vape use amongst teens in the community. The program will use volunteer teen leaders to aid in hosting a movie series that draws in fellow teens and provides education and advocacy about the dangers of nicotine vaping while also providing support and useful resources for how to quit.THE PROGRAMThe program will be facilitated in a smoke-free environment where teens can socialize through physical games while watching smoke-free cinematic entertainment. Teen leaders assist staff in planning events, social engagement activities, and marketing that will appeal to their peers. The four-part program series includes the showing of 4 smoke-free superhero films throughout the year. The events in June & August will be shown on the lawn in Turner Park, and the films in November & March will be shown in the gymnasium at the Parks and Recreation Center. Each event will begin with a physical activity that promotes exercise and social engagement. Vendor booths will be on-site for outreach and education. Participants can casually interact with local health officials and gather information about the dangers of vaping and smoking through interactive activities. Involvement includes attendance at monthly meetings (virtual or in-person) and at all planned programs and events, as well as support with program marketing, community outreach, and engagement.GET INVOLVED!Involvement includes attendance at planning meetings (virtual or in-person) and at all planned programs and events, in addition to support with program marketing, community outreach, and engagement.
