Pickleball Open Gym is offered at Pocahontas Landmark Center Gym on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00am to 12:00pm. Three indoor courts are available for play on a first come, first served basis. Players can purchase a Pickleball Play Pass, which includes 10 sessions for $25.00. Passes do not expire. Visitors have the option to pay a daily drop-in fee of $3.00 if they do not wish to purchase a pass. Join us for a fun and inclusive Open Gym experience where the court is shared for maximum enjoyment! One half is reserved for T-Rec play, while the other half is open to home school groups, offering a welcoming space for all. T-Rec Open Gym is designed for youth with disabilities to enjoy games at their own pace, develop skills, and have fun with friends in a supportive and inclusive environment.Available Games:

Drop-In Open Gym - Drop-In Open Gym
Mondays from 1:00pm-4:30pm, the gym is open for unsupervised, unstructured play for all ages! The gym will be split into two areas to accommodate multi-sport play, such as pickleball and basketball. Ping pong is available on the stage, and other games, such as giant Connect Four, and Cornhole, can be checked out from Recreation staff. All games are self-monitored. Good sportsmanship and proper conduct are expected. Youth under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. Advance registration is appreciated.Note: No food or beverages other than water are allowed in the gym. Soft-soled athletic shoes only.Program is closed on County-observed holidays (5/26) and for summer camps (7/21, 8/4).

Pickleball Open Gym is offered at Pocahontas Landmark Center Gym on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00am to 12:00pm. Three indoor courts are available for play on a first come, first served basis. Dodgeball isn’t just for kids — it’s back and better than ever for players 16yrs+ Whether you're out to win or just in it for the fun, all skill levels are welcome. Program occurs on Tuesdays from 6:00-9:00pm, September through October. Daily drop-in fee: $3.00 Note: No food or beverages other than water are allowed in the gym. Court
Standard Court Dimensions:
The Standard playing court measures between 50’ x 25’ (minimum) and 60’x 30’ (maximum, WDBF standard), with a center line evenly separating the two sides of the court. Exact dimensions are dependent on venue space availability.
Players
A minimum of 4 players and a maximum of 6 players are allowed to start for each team.
Time
A standard round robin match is 20 minutes
Game Setup & Flow
Ball Placement:
6 inactive balls are lined up on the center line.
Beginning of Play:
Players must start with one foot on the back line and the other foot inside the boundary line.
Soud whistle to begin play.
Opening Rush
Players are out if they step on the sidelines during the opening rush.
Players may touch or step over the center line to retrieve their team’s designated balls.
Ball Activation
Players must bring their respective balls behind their attack line (aka the clear line).
False Start
If a team removes their point of contact from the back line before the referee’s signal, it is considered a false start. The referee stops play, issues a verbal warning for the match, and resets the opening rush.
If a team false starts a second time (and for every additional false start) during a match, that team starts the current game with one out player.
Stoppage of Play
The referee may pause the game, including the throw clock, to wait until the burden ball is back in play or into the possession on the court sidelines.
There are no “timeouts” during gameplay.
Sequence of Play
A sequence of play begins with a live valid throw and is completed when the ball is considered dead or caught.
Hitting
A live player is deemed out when a live thrown ball that hits them on any part of their body (including hair, clothing, or accessories) is deemed dead.
Once a player is deemed out, they become an exiting player and must raise their hand and immediately head to their team’s designated queue.
If a player deflects a live ball into their body with their blocking ball, they are out once the thrown ball becomes dead.
If a player hits an opponent with a live ball, then the ball ricochets and its another opponent, both opponents are out once the ball becomes dead.
Blocking
A player may use a ball to block a live thrown ball and does not result in the blocker being out.
If a live thrown ball causes a blocking ball to be dropped and the dropped ball hits a surface, dead object, or other player, the dropped blocking ball is dead, and the blocking player is out. The live thrown ball must still complete its sequence of play.
Catching
If a player catches a live ball from their opponent, the catch is valid. The thrower is out and becomes an exiting player, and the first teammate in the queue becomes an entering player.
Player Entry
One catch from one live ball brings in one teammate as an entering player in the order in which they exited the game.
Ball Retrieval
Active players may not leave the court at any time to retrieve a ball
Inactive players can be designated ball retrievers.
Retrieved balls may be passed to live players or other ball retrievers.
Injuries
The referee must stop gameplay immediately if there are any injuries.
Interference
Players who are deemed out or inactive may not interfere with the game, the balls on the court, or active players.

The Parks & Recreation Advisory Commission (PRAC) is a panel of county citizens who act as a liaison between the public, the Board of Supervisors and the County Administration to advise on development, funding, programming, land acquisition, and maintenance related to Parks and Recreation activities and facilities. Meetings: PRAC welcomes all members of the community who want to stay informed and engage in the upcoming developments within our county parks and programs. Meetings are typically held on the first Thursday each month, in the training room at Pocahontas Landmark Center, 4290 Anderson Highway, from 6:00pm-8:00pm. Powhatan County is excited to announce an open call for artists and artisans/crafters to participate in our First Friday events at Village Park from May to September! This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase your talent, engage with the community, and sell your artwork in a vibrant outdoor setting. Events occur on 5/2, 6/6, 8/1, and 9/5 from 5:00pm - 8:00pm. Booth Fees are $20.00 per event or $65.00 for all four events.How to Participate:

Join us for a fun and inclusive Open Gym experience where the court is shared for maximum enjoyment! One half is reserved for T-Rec play, while the other half is open to home school groups, offering a welcoming space for all. T-Rec Open Gym is designed for youth with disabilities to enjoy games at their own pace, develop skills, and have fun with friends in a supportive and inclusive environment.Available Games:

Dodgeball isn’t just for kids — it’s back and better than ever for players 16yrs+ Whether you're out to win or just in it for the fun, all skill levels are welcome. Program occurs on Tuesdays from 6:00-9:00pm, September through October. Daily drop-in fee: $3.00 Note: No food or beverages other than water are allowed in the gym. Court
Standard Court Dimensions:
The Standard playing court measures between 50’ x 25’ (minimum) and 60’x 30’ (maximum, WDBF standard), with a center line evenly separating the two sides of the court. Exact dimensions are dependent on venue space availability.
Players
A minimum of 4 players and a maximum of 6 players are allowed to start for each team.
Time
A standard round robin match is 20 minutes
Game Setup & Flow
Ball Placement:
6 inactive balls are lined up on the center line.
Beginning of Play:
Players must start with one foot on the back line and the other foot inside the boundary line.
Soud whistle to begin play.
Opening Rush
Players are out if they step on the sidelines during the opening rush.
Players may touch or step over the center line to retrieve their team’s designated balls.
Ball Activation
Players must bring their respective balls behind their attack line (aka the clear line).
False Start
If a team removes their point of contact from the back line before the referee’s signal, it is considered a false start. The referee stops play, issues a verbal warning for the match, and resets the opening rush.
If a team false starts a second time (and for every additional false start) during a match, that team starts the current game with one out player.
Stoppage of Play
The referee may pause the game, including the throw clock, to wait until the burden ball is back in play or into the possession on the court sidelines.
There are no “timeouts” during gameplay.
Sequence of Play
A sequence of play begins with a live valid throw and is completed when the ball is considered dead or caught.
Hitting
A live player is deemed out when a live thrown ball that hits them on any part of their body (including hair, clothing, or accessories) is deemed dead.
Once a player is deemed out, they become an exiting player and must raise their hand and immediately head to their team’s designated queue.
If a player deflects a live ball into their body with their blocking ball, they are out once the thrown ball becomes dead.
If a player hits an opponent with a live ball, then the ball ricochets and its another opponent, both opponents are out once the ball becomes dead.
Blocking
A player may use a ball to block a live thrown ball and does not result in the blocker being out.
If a live thrown ball causes a blocking ball to be dropped and the dropped ball hits a surface, dead object, or other player, the dropped blocking ball is dead, and the blocking player is out. The live thrown ball must still complete its sequence of play.
Catching
If a player catches a live ball from their opponent, the catch is valid. The thrower is out and becomes an exiting player, and the first teammate in the queue becomes an entering player.
Player Entry
One catch from one live ball brings in one teammate as an entering player in the order in which they exited the game.
Ball Retrieval
Active players may not leave the court at any time to retrieve a ball
Inactive players can be designated ball retrievers.
Retrieved balls may be passed to live players or other ball retrievers.
Injuries
The referee must stop gameplay immediately if there are any injuries.
Interference
Players who are deemed out or inactive may not interfere with the game, the balls on the court, or active players.

Join us for a fun and inclusive Open Gym experience where the court is shared for maximum enjoyment! One half is reserved for T-Rec play, while the other half is open to home school groups, offering a welcoming space for all. T-Rec Open Gym is designed for youth with disabilities to enjoy games at their own pace, develop skills, and have fun with friends in a supportive and inclusive environment.Available Games:

16+ Fall Pick-up Dodgeball - 16+ Fall Open Gym Dodgeball
Dodgeball isn’t just for kids — it’s back and better than ever for players 16yrs+ Whether you're out to win or just in it for the fun, all skill levels are welcome. Program occurs on Tuesdays from 6:00-9:00pm, September through October. Daily drop-in fee: $3.00 Note: No food or beverages other than water are allowed in the gym. Court
Standard Court Dimensions:
The Standard playing court measures between 50’ x 25’ (minimum) and 60’x 30’ (maximum, WDBF standard), with a center line evenly separating the two sides of the court. Exact dimensions are dependent on venue space availability.
Players
A minimum of 4 players and a maximum of 6 players are allowed to start for each team.
Time
A standard round robin match is 20 minutes
Game Setup & Flow
Ball Placement:
6 inactive balls are lined up on the center line.
Beginning of Play:
Players must start with one foot on the back line and the other foot inside the boundary line.
Soud whistle to begin play.
Opening Rush
Players are out if they step on the sidelines during the opening rush.
Players may touch or step over the center line to retrieve their team’s designated balls.
Ball Activation
Players must bring their respective balls behind their attack line (aka the clear line).
False Start
If a team removes their point of contact from the back line before the referee’s signal, it is considered a false start. The referee stops play, issues a verbal warning for the match, and resets the opening rush.
If a team false starts a second time (and for every additional false start) during a match, that team starts the current game with one out player.
Stoppage of Play
The referee may pause the game, including the throw clock, to wait until the burden ball is back in play or into the possession on the court sidelines.
There are no “timeouts” during gameplay.
Sequence of Play
A sequence of play begins with a live valid throw and is completed when the ball is considered dead or caught.
Hitting
A live player is deemed out when a live thrown ball that hits them on any part of their body (including hair, clothing, or accessories) is deemed dead.
Once a player is deemed out, they become an exiting player and must raise their hand and immediately head to their team’s designated queue.
If a player deflects a live ball into their body with their blocking ball, they are out once the thrown ball becomes dead.
If a player hits an opponent with a live ball, then the ball ricochets and its another opponent, both opponents are out once the ball becomes dead.
Blocking
A player may use a ball to block a live thrown ball and does not result in the blocker being out.
If a live thrown ball causes a blocking ball to be dropped and the dropped ball hits a surface, dead object, or other player, the dropped blocking ball is dead, and the blocking player is out. The live thrown ball must still complete its sequence of play.
Catching
If a player catches a live ball from their opponent, the catch is valid. The thrower is out and becomes an exiting player, and the first teammate in the queue becomes an entering player.
Player Entry
One catch from one live ball brings in one teammate as an entering player in the order in which they exited the game.
Ball Retrieval
Active players may not leave the court at any time to retrieve a ball
Inactive players can be designated ball retrievers.
Retrieved balls may be passed to live players or other ball retrievers.
Injuries
The referee must stop gameplay immediately if there are any injuries.
Interference
Players who are deemed out or inactive may not interfere with the game, the balls on the court, or active players.

Join us for a fun and inclusive Open Gym experience where the court is shared for maximum enjoyment! One half is reserved for T-Rec play, while the other half is open to home school groups, offering a welcoming space for all. T-Rec Open Gym is designed for youth with disabilities to enjoy games at their own pace, develop skills, and have fun with friends in a supportive and inclusive environment.Available Games:

Pickleball
Corn Hole
Connect Four
Giant Jenga
Whether you're shooting hoops, tossing bean bags, or stacking jumbo blocks, there's something for everyone!Adult Supervision is required.

Open Gym Walking - Open Gym Walking
Open Gym Walking is available to the public Monday through Friday through November 25, 2025 from Noon until 1:00pm at the Pocahontas Landmark Center Gym. The program is free to Powhatan County Residents. An annual fee of $5.00 is charged to non-Residents.Summer & Fall schedule is Monday - Friday beginning June 2, 2025 through November 30, 2025 from Noon to 1:00pm. NOTE: There are some dates the gym is not available: County Holidays and July 14-18 for Summer camp.

After School Hoops - After School Hoops - Open Gym Basketball
Meet up at the PLC gym after school on Mondays and Wednesdays during the school year for a pick-up game with friends. This time is reserved for basketball only. There are six basketball hoops on one full-size court. Games can be split into half-court for multiple games. All games are self-monitored, so good sportsmanship and proper conduct are expected. Advance registration is appreciated.Free!Note: No food or beverages other than water are allowed in the gym.
